News Releases

Ruby’s Baskets—This holiday season is going to be very difficult for many of our friends and neighbors. It is only a temporary situation for many so if we can afford to give a little to get them through the holidays it would be wonderful. Times will get better and many of the families that we provide for today will prosper and provide for another tomorrow.

Over 50 years ago Ruby Wilson started a Christmas basket program to help needy families share the joy and happiness of the holiday season. Ruby passed away a few years back but her spirit lingers on through Ruby’s Baskets, a tradition carried on by the Rio Linda Lion’s Club. Lion Chuck Gordon is the chief basketier but he could not do it without the help from community schools, businesses, organizations, and you who come together to make this program a success every year.

Collection boxes are located at SaveWay Foods, the Community Center, Curves, Elverta Market, Papa’s, and Archway Market. Please drop a can or two and possibly a new unwrapped toy for a family in need.

Raley’s has donated turkeys and ham, Saveway has donated freezer space, the Methodist Church has donated space, and many other folks are pulling together to make Ruby’s basket happen again in 2009

What You Can Do:

· Donate cans of food at the listed locations

· Organize a food drive

· Donate cash to pay for the gaps in donations

· Come and help us sort cans and box them up

· Donate pizza and ice cream on the days the West Side Charter Kids are doing the primary sorting

· Become a part of the lions club and have a lot of fun serving our wonderful community
