The Rio Linda Lions Club is very proud of two big events in 2017. Under Shelli Bolsover’s Presidency, the first Welcome to Rio Linda sign was erected at the corner of 16th and Elkhorn Blvd. Under Ed Valencia’s presidency, a second sign was erected on Rio Linda Blvd near Marysville Blvd. Lion Laury Porter chaired this effort to success. Many community groups came together to make sure our community is well represented. We are in the process of making both of these accomplishments Lions international Centennial Legacy Projects. These signs will welcome visitors and residents with a positive feeling of community and belonging for years to come.
Student Speaker Contest—We host the District 4-C5 Student Speaker Contest annually in February. This year’s topic is: “Integrity and Civility Play What Role in Today’s Society?” The winners get fabulous cash and scholarship prizes.
Purpose of the Contest
- To provide an opportunity for competitive public speaking among students on a subject of vital interest to the contestants and to the American people as a whole.
- To stimulate self-expression and independent thinking.
- To present to the public through the student speakers contests the problems surrounding the maintenance of this commonwealth as a free nation.
- To consider the means at our disposal of meeting the present and future world problems.
Sweetheart Serenade—The Rio Linda Lions sponsors the Rio Linda High School Music Department’s annual fundraiser that enables students to travel to music competitions. We host the cake walk, provide raffle prizes and generally have fun.
Bunco—This is a new idea that is being considered to raise money for the 3rd Grade Reading Program. Please consider volunteering to help and joining us at the events when they take place. Bunco is a very simple, fun game that can be learned on the spot. Players purchase a seat at one of the many tables of fun. They play, socialize, eat, drink and possibly win fabulous prizes and cash.
